Stinky Dentures? How to Manage and Prevent Odors

Ideally, your dentures should have a neutral smell. They should not cause bad breath or be the source of an unpleasant taste in your mouth. But what if you have noticed that they seem to be collecting odors? That is a common problem. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to freshen up your prosthetic. Here are some tips for managing and preventing unwanted odors:

Improve Your Daily Denture Cleaning Routine

Your daily denture cleaning routine should be as thorough as possible. Be sure to:

  • Remove your dentures and rinse them under running water to eliminate any loose debris.
  • Use a soft-bristled brush and a non-abrasive denture cleanser to clean every surface, including the areas that touch your gums and palate. Avoid regular toothpaste, since it can be abrasive and cause microscopic scratches that trap bacteria and odors.
  • Clean your mouth, gums, tongue, and any remaining teeth before reinserting your dentures. Doing so minimizes odor-causing bacteria and helps keep your breath fresh.

Invest in an Ultrasonic Cleaner

An ultrasonic cleaner offers a reliable method to achieve a deeper clean for your dentures. This device uses ultrasonic waves to dislodge plaque, bacteria, and food particles from hard-to-reach areas. Place your dentures in the cleaner with a recommended solution and allow the device to run its cycle. You will notice that your dentures feel and smell fresher afterward. Incorporate this tool into your weekly routine for optimal results, especially if you notice persistent odors despite regular brushing and soaking.

Address Dry Mouth

If you experience dry mouth, you should address it promptly; it can be a major contributor to denture odors. Saliva naturally washes away bacteria and food particles, so a lack of moisture in your mouth allows odors to develop more easily. Drink plenty of water throughout the day and consider using a saliva substitute if recommended by your dentist. Chewing sugar-free gum or sucking on sugar-free lozenges may also help stimulate saliva production.

Do Not Smoke

Smoking can lead to stubborn odors in your dentures and mouth because tobacco leaves residue that is difficult to remove. The chemicals in cigarettes and other tobacco products even promote bacterial growth and can stain your prosthetic. If you want to keep your dentures smelling fresh, you should avoid all forms of smoking.

Visit Your Dentist Regularly

Schedule regular dental checkups to ensure your dentures remain in optimal condition. Your dentist will inspect your prosthetic for any signs of damage or buildup that may be causing odors. If the odor-causing materials are deeply entrenched enough in your prosthetic, your dentist might recommend replacement. They can also offer tailored advice to help you design an effective oral hygiene routine.

A bad smell in your dentures is frustrating and embarrassing! Fortunately, a few adjustments to your routine may help you enjoy a fresher smile.
